Pharmaceuticals giant AstraZeneca has appointed a new CIO following the retirement of Paul Burfitt.

Burfitt officially retired this week after seven years as global CIO for the company and will be replaced by internal candidate Rich Williams.

Williams took up the role in April this year, with Burfitt working alongside him until he left AstraZeneca this week. Williams joined AstraZeneca in 1992 and has more than 20 years' experience in the pharmaceutical and consumer products industries.

A spokesman for AstraZeneca said Williams will have overall accountability to the senior executive team for the efficient delivery of global IS services, as well as maintaining the quality and innovation of the company's IS capability and ensuring it delivers and drives business value.

Burfitt is now working as an independent strategic advisor and consultant.
