Taxman gets new CIO
As previous IT chief gets promotion...

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has appointed a new CIO to replace Steve Lamey, who has been promoted to a wider operating role as COO for the department.

Lamey, who was named one of the UK's top CIOs in the silicon.com CIO50 2007, joined HMRC in October 2004 from British Gas and oversaw the integration of the IT operations of Customs & Excise and the Inland Revenue into the newly merged government department.

As COO Lamey will have a much wider remit and responsibility for the performance measures of the department.

He is replaced as CIO by Deepak Singh who joined HMRC last year from T-Mobile, where he was executive VP for IT strategy, governance, quality management and change management.

Singh has 20 years' experience in the commercial sector with companies such as AstraZeneca, Jaguar, NPower and Phillips Electronics and has extensive experience on large-scale IT projects.

He will also join HMRC's executive committee and take Lamey's place on the government's CIO Council.

A HMRC spokeswoman said the executive changes took place last week.
