Applications to register a pension scheme, registering pension scheme returns, accounting for tax returns, event reports, notices of winding up a registered pension scheme and notifications of a scheme administrator terminating their appointment will all have to be submitted to HMRC online from now on.

In a statement, Julie Elsey, HMRC head of pension schemes services, said: "If you're a pension scheme administrator, and you haven't registered to file online, you should do so as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may be storing up problems for the future."

Administrators will have to register online to apply for an ID before they can submit documents and notices. A guide for using the service is available at www.hmrc.gov/pensionschemes/online-user-guide.pdf.

Any paper filings sent after today will be sent back and deemed not received by HMRC.
