Eric Abensur No. 28 Eric Abensur, CEO, Wanadoo

Last year's position: Not placed

Apart from the morphing of Freeserve into Wanadoo to shed the dot-com associations, Eric Abensur has been pushing the ISP from a standard portfolio towards a grand consumer digital vision.

Perhaps most deserving of the Agenda Setter title is Abensur's drive to get the UK up to same level of digital lifestyle as some of the more technologically advanced European nations.

Abensur has been pressing BT for local loop unbundling with some success to free up the fat-pipe market. Wanadoo was also the first to push 512Kbps and then 1Mbps broadband under the £18 barrier, prompting similar drops from several rivals and a general cheapening up of high speed net access.

If Abensur has his way, every home will have a digital hub. Wanadoo took the first step with the launch of LiveBox, a wireless network with Bluetooth and other connectivity destined for UK homes. He's also planning a video-on-demand push, potentially with NTL and Sky, and is scheduled to join up with fellow France Telecom-parented Orange for a phone that can switch between VoIP in the home and normal mobile networks on the move. These are the sorts of initiatives other ISPs are going to have to race to catch up with.
