An Argentine entrepreneur with an impressive track record, Martin Varsavsky's past successes have included fibre network operator Jazztel Telecomunicaciones and Spanish online content company Ya.com.
But he makes the list this year for his latest venture, Fon, a company that's taking on the mobile operators by creating a WiMax - or metro-level wireless - network in Europe.
Capitalising on the frustration over the high cost and inflexibility of mobile phone networks and the disappointment over 3G speeds, Fon promises to offer bandwidth of over 2MB within a limited range - while letting you use the same instant messaging and email apps as on your laptop.
"He can disrupt the entire 3G model," one panellist said.
