No. 40 Mark J Cox, senior director of engineering, Red Hat

Last year's position: Not placed
Computer whiz-kid made good, 34-year-old Mark J Cox has a reputation for being able to straddle the commercial software and open source worlds.
"He's a big friend of likes of Oracle and IBM... while still keeping the Slashdot.org people happy," one panellist said of the Brit.
Along with his contributions to Linux distributor Red Hat, he's been part of the development team for the Apache web server for nearly a decade and a founding member of the OpenSSL Group - all the while taking on commercial projects as well.
If open source is going to take hold in corporations - a major theme this year - the proprietary and open source communities are going to have to learn to get along. Cox serves as a shining example of how this can be done.
