Terry Semel

No. 28 Terry Semel, chairman and CEO, Yahoo!

Last year's position: Not placed

Yahoo! is back, big time. The company has gone from strength to strength since its stock reached an all-time low during the dark days of the internet downturn. And it's growing its offer accordingly in an attempt to protect against future downturns, embracing VoIP and adding far richer premium content to its portal, through deals such as the Flickr acquisition.

Hollywood-veteran-turned-online-tycoon Terry Semel has proved to be the indefatigable driving force behind this revival.

While he would doubtless like to escape Google's shadow, he must settle for trying to cement second place behind the unrivalled behemoth of search and internet content.

QUOTATION

"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
