TOP 50
Jonathan Ive

No. 32 Jonathan Ive, VP of industrial design, Apple

Last year's position: 15

Jonathan Ive is unquestionably the man who made the 'you can have any colour as long as it's white' mantra fashionable and helped make Apple's fortune by making tech sexy.

With responsibility for the much-loved iMac and Apple's sleek hardware design, UK ex-pat Ive works closely with Cupertino head honcho Steve Jobs in developing every Apple product's identity.

As the man behind the iconic iPod's appearance, there's no doubt Ive has had a significant role to play in Apple's recent transformation.

However, according to our panel, Ive has won his Agenda Setters place for making tech easy to use for the average Joe and transforming gadgets from geek to chic. One panellist says of Ive: "He has actually taken computing from being something that is ugly and difficult to use to something that is more attractive to the masses both from a usability perspective and from a visual perspective. And I think that is a massive influence over the way IT is viewed by the consumer."

QUOTATION

"China clearly has many dimensions and many are setting an agenda. It's at the political level, it's at the investment level, it's at the contract manufacturing level and it's at the software level - it's all over."
--Peter Rowell, Regent Associates executive chairman and Agenda Setters panellist
