Gadget e-tailer iwantoneofthose.com (Iwoot) has opened a Second Life island which contains a virtual store selling real-life goods.

Once on the Iwoot island - which also has a beach, lighthouse and maze - users can buy real items.

Tim Booth, Iwoot founder and creative director, said Second Life provides a safe way to test how to move the Iwoot business from its 2D website into 3D worlds but added: "We are not expecting to sell millions and millions of gadgets online through Second Life."

The 65,536 square metres of virtual space cost £800 to purchase and a "few thousand pounds" to develop out-of-house with Second Life content creators Riel Life Productions, he said.

Booth added: "As long as we can keep up and possibly stay slightly ahead of the competition then the business case will bare itself out for very little upfront debt."
