VoIP is shaping up to be the next big thing to hit telecoms and now even the Department of Trade and Industry is encouraging UK small businesses to get involved.

The DTI has issued a guide on for SMEs not yet in the know about internet telephony to help small companies find out how VoIP could save them cash.

The guide also details other benefits of switching to making phone calls over broadband, where to start when considering a switch to VoIP and potential outlay for necessary VoIP equipment. It also includes case studies from businesses that have made the change already.

According to figures from analyst house Frost and Sullivan, VoIP will make up 75 per cent of all international phone traffic in 2007. It's around six per cent now.
