NEWS The 'global' launch of Windows 98 has missed out on most of Europe, at least temporarily.
Only English, German and Spanish versions hit European streets on 25 June. The French launch is scheduled for 8 July and the Italian version following on 10 July. The Swedish, Dutch and Portuguese editions will be released within a month, and the rest of Europe should follow within three months.
Microsoft put the delays down to the need to customise the software for specific countries. A spokeswoman at Microsoft's European headquarters in Europe said: "Also, the holiday season is so much more important here than in the United States."
The European launches that did happen met with good initial sales. In the UK, PC World had sold over 5000 copies of Windows 98 by close of business on Thursday.
"It's selling faster than Windows 95," said a PC World spokesman. "We were not expecting such a good response."
