Computacenter waits for verdict

By John Oates, 3 July 1998 16:07

NEWS Computacenter will have to wait until early August to find out if it will have to pay £0.5m to ex-employee Caroline Olds. All evidence has now been heard at the tribunal and the three judges will meet in secret to decide a verdict on the 13 July. The decision will not be made public until early August. Caroline Olds, who has already won her case against the UK computer dealer for unfair dismissal, is also claiming sexual discrimination. She believes she was passed over for promotion and claimed in court that at the time of her sacking, Computacenter had no women in genuine management positions. Speaking after the case, Olds, who represented herself at the trial, said she was glad to put it behind her. She added: "It has worn me down - focussing on something so negative, for so long." She plans to take a few weeks off and is thinking about starting her own business. Computacenter is already facing another case for racial discrimination and there are fears that if Olds wins, other lawsuits will follow.
