Charges dropped as Microsoft case falters

NEWS Charges against Microsoft which accuse the company of forcing computer vendors to choose its Office product, have been withdrawn. Prosecutors from 20 US states agreed to drop the claims relating to the Office suite of products, which include word processing, spreadsheets and other applications. They claim they are "tightening" the case, to enable them to devote more resources to the upcoming hearing in September. However the revised complaint omits allegations that Microsoft acted illegally by tying its email program, Outlook Express, to the Windows operating system. Microsoft said it is pleased the "groundless allegations" have been withdrawn.
