IT heavyweights to testify in Microsoft case

NEWS Larry Ellison is among chiefs from three top IT companies who are set to testify tomorrow in front of the US Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on alleged anti-competitive practices by Microsoft. Names on the provisional witness list include Ellison, CEO at Oracle, Mitchell Kertzman, Sybase chairman and Jeff Papows, CEO at Lotus. Ellison is expected to testify and then take part in a question and answer session after the hearing. However, Microsoft will not send a representative to the hearing, claiming the company's presence "would not serve any useful purpose". Spokesman Adam Sohn said Microsoft had already "gone the extra mile to cooperate" when Bill Gates testified for more than four hours at the first hearing in March. Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced the appointment of Bill Gates' long-term second in command, Steve Ballmer, to the position of president. The role of president has remained unoccupied since the resignation of Jon Shirley in 1990. Since then, those duties have been carried out by an executive committee. Gates will continue as chairman and CEO but will concentrate on "architectural breakthroughs" and the long-term future of the company.
