In brief: Mori poll boosts online banking

NEWS More than a third of current account holders expect to use online services to arrange their finances within the next ten years. Research from Mori, sponsored by First Direct, indicates that nearly 12 million accounts will be controlled this way by 2008. Currently, less than 1 per cent of account holders use the Internet to handle their money. In addition, 47 per cent are enthusiastic about the arrival of TV banking. Access to current accounts at odd times of the day will not be the driver for online banking though, according First Direct commercial director, Peter Simpson. "The fact that we are open round the clock is not the central appeal," he said. "It is that customers never have to worry about missing us. They are in control and set their own agenda."
