NEWS Barclays Bank has admitted that the system crashes it suffered last Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday were due to "an operational problem with its data centre in Gloucester". The problem forced the bank to shut down cash machines. A source close to the situation told Silicon News: "The trouble started when the bank tried to install an IMS database management software upgrade from the bank's systems supplier, IBM. It ended up corrupting some of the files, causing the system to crash." The Barclays spokeswoman denied the database was at the cause of the problem, but she could give no further details. "IBM has nothing directly to do with the problem," she insisted. IBM was unavailable for comment, but the high-street bank said the problem has been resolved.
