By Tony Hallett, 5 August 1998 16:41

NEWS Dr John Taylor, head of Hewlett-Packard's European research centre, is to become the UK government's science tsar. Peter Mandelson, newly-appointed Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, said Dr Taylor's career and background made him the ideal candidate for the role, which involves working with the chief executives of the Research Councils and the academic and user communities.
