European banks spend more on IT

NEWS Western European banks' IT spending will increase this year as they rush to take advantage of the latest banking technology. Internet banking, kiosks and call centre automation will be among the items on banks shopping lists, according to Barbara Blesio, senior research analyst at IDC. IDC claims banks needed to use IT to improve the services on offer to the customer. Blesio said: "Banks are spending more as they are trying to revive their delivery channel strategy by exploiting new technology. They are also setting up new markets to leverage new technology to revise old structures within the banks." Blesio added that the successful European banks will be the ones who can work with partners to tackle problems such as the euro. The research predicted that expenditure will focus on delivery of banking applications such as the automation of traditional branches and Internet banking. Blesio predicted that customer demand for easier access is forcing banks to reorganise themselves and develop separate delivery channels to distribute old and new services.
