In brief: UK government ignored cattle tracking system says scientist

By Sarah Left, 9 September 1998 12:34

NEWS A UK government scientist warned the Ministry for Agriculture Fisheries and Food (Maff) seven years ago that a national cattle tracking system would combat BSE and other diseases. Dr. Peter Bunyan, who made the recommendation in 1991, will testify in front of the BSE inquiry in London this month. The suggestion went unheeded, except in Northern Ireland, and that decision has cost the British beef industry hundreds of millions of pounds. The ban on Northern Irish beef was lifted on 1 June, because a comprehensive computerised cattle tracking system proved to the EU that animals were BSE-free. For the rest of the UK, the Cattle Tracking System will go live at the end of this month.
