In brief: Laser technology helps new-born babies

NEWS Medical researchers at University College London are developing laser imaging to monitor new-born children suffering from oxygen starvation. Dr Jeremy Hebden, who is leading the project, presented his findings at the annual conference of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, last week. He explained how his team has built a ring of wires that sends harmless pulses of light through a baby's brain, to measure the distribution of oxygen inside. Quick diagnosis of oxygen starvation can stop children from becoming brain-damaged, and this was the only technique that could be used on children so young, he said. Hebden's research is sponsored by the Wellcome Trust. Construction of the imaging device is nearly finished, and clinical tests are due to begin soon.
