New Yorkers go back to cash as smartcard trial falters

By John Oates, 12 October 1998 17:31

NEWS One of the world's first large-scale smartcard projects has been hit by problems with its card readers. The trial in New York is backed by Chase Manhattan, Citicorp, Visa and Mastercard. Free smartcards were distributed to 96,000 residents in Manhattan to find out how people reacted to using them. The cards are refilled at ATM machines in the area and were accepted by 600 retailers - but since the trial started more than a third of the shops taking part have either given up on the machines or been removed from the list by the organisers. Most of the hardware was provided by Hewlett-Packard's Verifone unit. The experiment is one of the first to use both Visa and Mastercard products. Conclusions from the trial will be presented to the OECD conference in Ottawa, Canada.
