War graves site battles with demand

NEWS A free online database of War graves is struggling to cope with massive demand just one day after its launch. The Web site, which was launched yesterday to coincide with remembrance celebrations, holds Commonwealth War Graves Commission records on the 1.7 million Commonwealth soldiers and civilians who died in the two world wars. A spokeswoman at the War Graves Commission admitted that the site has struggled to cope with the initial surge in demand, with many users being denied access. Its creators anticipated a hit rate of 50,000 enquiries per year, but the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) - which provides Internet access to the database - is now rushing to provide extra bandwidth. The War Graves Commission spokeswoman said: "Exceptionally heavy demand means that people are experiencing some problems. The CCTA is trying to provide more lines, and we are advising people to try later."
