NEWS Comdex Fall98 starts next week, with technology vendors out in force to present their visions of the future. The IT industry's biggest trade show will feature a Linux Pavilion, stalls on everything from call centres to encryption, and the latest digital TV hardware. Over 220,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event, which runs from 16 to 19 November at the Las Vegas Convention Center. In a special Sunday night keynote speech, Microsoft chairman and CEO, Bill Gates will profile his company as an innovator, just as lawyers are trying to do the opposite in court. Other keynotes will come from the heads of Compaq, Computer Associates, Intel, Lotus, Oracle, UUNet and Xerox. The US government is sponsoring a Y2K partner pavilion, to advise companies on last-minute preparations. Microsoft will be promoting its SQL Server 7 database, and hardware vendors including Compaq will showcase TV tuners for desktop computers. Panel sessions will include the IT obsession with total cost of ownership, real world ecommerce and converging digital channels. Full details of the show have been published at www.comdex.com.
