NEWS The US State of Virginia will unveil America's first law for monitoring the Internet next week. But the legislation will rely on recommendations - rather than force - to set up a framework for electronic commerce. Governor Jim Gilmore's Internet Policy Act aims to balance the right level of consumer protection with business-friendly policies. Senior executives from AOL, Microsoft, Oracle, PSINet and Verisign are backing the policy, which could become a model for the rest of the US. Gilmore was dubbed 'the nation's Internet governor' when he gave early support for the US Internet Tax Freedom Act. His latest project has the support of Clinton's Internet advisor, Ira Magaziner, who is known for his whole-hearted belief in the free market. Full details will be announced on 2 December when the Governor's Commission on Information Technology meets in Virginia.
