David Beier takes on US government Internet role

NEWS A successor has been found for Ira Magaziner, President Clinton's Internet advisor. David Beier - who currently advises vice president Al Gore on a range of domestic policies - is expected to take the post in January, when Magaziner retires. The appointment was disclosed yesterday by a White House spokesman, but no official statement has yet been released. Clinton's advisor will have a crucial role over the next few years, as the Internet domain naming system is gradually transferred from state control to the private sector. Privacy issues and a framework for ecommerce are also high on the agenda. Beier's current portfolio includes technology but he also advises Gore on health, crime and the economy. It is not clear whether he will go through any training before he becomes the government's official Internet expert.
