NEWS Compaq will provide computers and managed services to South Lanarkshire Council in a four-year deal worth £4.2m. Compaq announced today it will provide financing, desktop PCs, installation and support to the council, and promises to manage the whole cycle of computing through to recycling. As part of the programme, the company will manage over 3,500 desktop PCs and place full-time staff in council offices. Audit and additional user training services will be undertaken as part of the deal, although networking and server maintenance are not thought to be included. This is the first managed services contract provided by a computer vendor in Scotland. Compaq's customer services marketing manager Dan Socci said: "Local authorities have a cost-cutting mandate and this kind of service allows us to take responsibility for all their project management, and account for the IT cost of every member of staff. It's the kind of business that Compaq is looking to do more of." Socci said the contract - which will begin in March - will enable South Lanarkshire to save £2m over the four-year period. Compaq will also manage South Lanarkshire's Y2K compliance program. South Lanarkshire Council was unavailable for comment.
