UK government launches NHS high-tech drive

By John Oates, 1 February 1999 00:30

NEWS UK health secretary Frank Dobson has announced the details of government proposals to reform the National Health Service (NHS) - including setting up the world's first nationwide online prescription service. Doctors' surgeries across the country will be linked to the Web - via NHS Net - to allow patients to book appointments and for doctors to email prescriptions directly to chemists. The first step is a trial in 24 surgeries allowing email appointments to be made. Blood tests will also be emailed straight to surgeries. Even more ambitious is the planned Prodigy network which will be set up over 1999. This will allow prescriptions to be ordered over the Internet by patients. Dobson added that the government's final aim is to have an electronic medical record of every patient in the UK so details can be accessed from anywhere.
