NEWS NHS Direct - the UK health service's telephone helpline - has received an extra boost in the form of government funds. Speaking yesterday in the House of Lords, health minister, Baroness Hayman, said an extra £10m will be poured into the existing £44m NHS Modernisation Fund. The additional funding comes as the health service continues to roll out NHS Direct throughout the UK. The past month has seen the project launch in the Black Country and Essex, the latter move bringing 1.1 million people within reach. Next week, Nottinghamshire is due to open a call centre followed by one in West London early in March. Baroness Hayman said the government plans to ensure 60 per cent of the country has access to NHS Direct by the end of the year.
