CompUSA sees profits tumble

By John Oates, 4 February 1999 17:04

NEWS The US' largest computer retailer, CompUSA, saw quarterly profits cut in half for the three months to 26 December last year. While revenues of $1.78bn were up 22 per cent on the same period a year ago, profits fell 54 per cent to $15.6m - down from $34.1m last year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company blamed falling PC prices for the lost profits. But it claimed good growth in Internet sales, where it plans to increase spending from $2m to $3m per quarter. The CompUSA site will also start offering downloadable software.
