NEWS The UK government has published advice to help businesses avoid computer theft. The Home Office report, called 'Pulling the Plug on Computer Theft', warns companies that the average computer theft costs £2,616 and repeat burglaries are common - so security should be increased immediately after an initial burglary. Researchers also noted the sophistication of the black market for stolen computer equipment. They claim thieves check out the latest market demand with dealers, then steal specific models. The report advises firms to install swipe card security systems, keep a register of serial numbers and to avoid displaying expensive equipment in glass-fronted buildings.
