NEWS UK local authorities escaped being 'named and shamed' yesterday when government Y2K agency, Action 2000, chose not to issue detailed reports on the performance of town halls. Action 2000 uses a colour coding system to illustrate the relative readiness of companies and organisations within the public sector. The system identifies those that have not done enough to prevent disruption to emergency, transport and other services. Most local authorities were keen not to have the colour coding applied because they would fall into the 'white' category - indicating that Action 2000 was unable to make a proper assessment because there was insufficient information. However, town halls won't escape the spotlight for long. According to Action 2000 chairman, Don Cruickshank, all organisations will be subject to scrutiny in the next round of assessment in July.
