NEWS The United Nations (UN) will meet in Bangkok today to debate how technology can help pull Asian countries out of economic recession. Three IT experts based in the region will tell the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Escap) how IT can be used to bolster economies by cancelling out geographical disadvantages and increasing efficiency in government and commercial offices. The experts are Dr K K Bajaj, deputy director general of the National Informatics Centre of India, Hwand Eui-Hwan, director of the technology standards, information and communication policy office, Ministry of Information and Communication, the Republic of Korea and Mark Dickens, executive director, supervision of markets in the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission. They'll discuss the development of ecommerce in Asia and the Pacific and the importance of Internet security. Escap has noted that developments in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) could be used to tackle the problems of inequality which are so prevalent in the region, by opening up trade beyond national boundaries. But it has warned that Asian and Pacific countries must develop a common regulatory infrastructure to cope with ecommerce if they are to reap the benefits.
