Microsoft monopoly is a threat says AOL chief

NEWS Steve Case, AOL's chairman, has dismissed claims that his company's takeover of Netscape proves that Microsoft cannot hold a monopoly position in the online market. In the ongoing anti-trust trial in the US, Microsoft had testified that the merger made court proceedings irrelevant, as it showed that the company's rivals have the "ability and the resources to change the competitive landscape overnight". However, Case told lawyers on Friday that he was not interested in the browser market and that the real attraction of Netscape had been its portal and ecommerce presence. He also denied that the AOL/Netscape deal had anything to do with the operating systems market and added that a Washington Post article saying he thought it "foolish" to compete against Microsoft was accurate.
