London's Mayor to get e-mandate

By Suzanna Kerridge, 6 July 1999 13:30

NEWS London's Mayoral and Assembly elections moved one step closer to an electronic voting system yesterday when minister for London, Nick Raynsford, announced the shortlist of possible suppliers. Raynsford said four companies have been shortlisted: Election Systems & Software with Unisys, Data & Research Services; Nedap and Smurfit. Proposals for the equipment, which could include touch screen voting at polling stations or optical scanners to speed up the counting process, will be submitted over the next few weeks. Demonstrations will then be given by the suppliers to Deputy Prime Minster, John Prescott. Raynsford said the government's top priority is to run "a successful election on 4 May 2000".
