Classroom IT set for upgrade

NEWS The annual conference of IT teachers is today discussing changes in the National Curriculum and how IT is taught. Run by the National Association for Co-ordinators and Teachers of IT (ACITT), the assembly will include Government advisors plus representatives from the Department for Education, who will put forward plans to change the way IT is taught and used in schools. Pupils will be set specific IT targets in a whole range of subjects - not just information and communication technology (ICT). The move will also call for much more IT expertise from the average teacher. A spokeswoman for the Department of Education and Employment stressed that although schools are heading in the right direction, there is still a long way to go. She said: "83 per cent of schools are now online but it could just mean that they have one computer with limited applications." There is just one week remaining to offer feedback before the government closes its public consultation.
