EC adopts 'distance selling' proposals

NEWS The European Commission (EC) has approved draft regulations on 'distance selling' that could have profound implications on ecommerce in Europe. The regulations will now come before the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers. The proposals would mean that consumer vendor conflicts would be subject to law in the country of the consumer, not the vendor (see http://www.silicon.com/a31360 ). Ecommerce organisations have complained that firms wishing to conduct business online will have to be aware of regulations in all 15 EU countries. In a statement, the EC sought to quell fears over the impact of the new rules. It said it has taken note of concerns and is aiming to balance consumer protection alongside measures that would "facilitate the take-off of electronic commerce". Following criticism of a lack of consultation on the issue, the EC also announced plans to set up a forum to discuss the matter in the autumn, comprising industry figures, regulators, consumers and legislators.
