HSBC set to lose £600,000 in RSI case

By Jon Bernstein, 22 July 1999 15:46

NEWS HSBC today failed to overthrow a court ruling awarding damages to five former employees of the bank who claimed their work had caused repetitive strain injury (RSI). The ruling is a further endorsement of RSI as a recognised medical condition and follows research published in last week's Lancet which provided new physical evidence (see http://www.silicon.com/a31560 ). Last May, HSBC (formerly Midland Bank) was forced to pay a total of £60,000 to the workers who had developed RSI after work rates increased sharply. The failed appeal leaves HSBC facing legal costs of up to £600,000.
