Dell way ahead in Web sales

NEWS Dell is now turning over more than $30m per day in Internet sales, according the company's latest financial results. According to Media Metrix, the figure puts it way ahead of all other Web retailers, with total revenues from all the other top 20 firms amounting to less than half of Dell's online revenues. $5m per day comes from European online deals, and one third of that originates in the UK, according to Martyn Lambert, marketing director at Dell Computer UK & Ireland. "We're doing about a million pounds a day in the UK and Ireland on the Internet," he said, "We're going to drive that to greater than 45 per cent over the next three or four months." In its Q2 results, announced this week, Dell revenues are up 42 per cent to $6.1bn with net income up 47 per cent to $507m. Recent IDC figures put Dell in the number one spot in the UK PC market, ahead of Compaq for the first time, while consolidating its number two position in Western Europe with a 10.6 per cent share of the market. David Wright, commercial PC group director at Compaq, said: "Dell has had a good quarter, which is good news for Compaq." Wright believes that after spending a difficult year restructuring itself, this could be the spur Compaq needs. "We should have been growing but we focused on getting our own house in order," he said, claiming Dell still has a long way to go before it can challenge Compaq worldwide. Dell's Lambert is now expecting fiercer competition, but insists the company is ready. "We're looking to see 40 per cent plus growth in Europe," Lambert said.
