NEWS The French government is set to introduce a swathe of Internet-related legislation in early 2000. Prime minister Lionel Jospin hopes to formalise mechanisms for applying existing laws to the online world, in particular those governing encryption, confidentiality, consumer protection, copyright and piracy. The creation of an independent body - comprising private and public representatives - is also likely to address these issues. A report in today's Wall Street Journal Europe, claimed that the precise nature of the legislation will not be revealed until October, but that it's likely to bring France into line with European Commission directives.
