Government gives go ahead to GP appointment scheme

NEWS UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, today announced £20m in extra funding for a computer project designed to cut the cost of missed NHS appointments. The system will allow GPs to make appointments with patients while they are still in the surgery - enabling them to check availability and book the most convenient time. It is hoped the on-the-spot service will cut down on the 8.5 million GP appointments missed each year. The government estimates that around £250m is wasted annually on missed outpatients bookings alone. The extra money will allow trials to be extended from 24 to 84 medical centres nationwide, including Bath, Birmingham and Wakefield.
