NEWS The Metropolitan Police is outsourcing its IT department to Sema Group as part of a £125m deal. Sema will be responsible for 14,500 desktop computers for the Met as well as network support and application support for the next five years. John Tilley, managing director at Sema Group said: "We want to do two things - reduce the cost of the existing infrastructure and become a real partner extending the role of technology within the organisation." Two hundred and ten IT staff from the Metropolitan Police will move across to the Sema Group as part of the negotiation. Sema will be responsible for help desk services and assisting the Met to move its IT strategy forward. Tilley added: "In practical terms this means getting data to the right place at the right time." "Up to a point IT is within the remit of any business but the speed of implementing new technology is such that it is very difficult for any business to keep up with what is bleeding edge technology and what is ready to implement." For the future Tilley commented: "I will be very disappointed if we haven't made big changes in the next few years."
