NEWS Minister for the Cabinet Office, Mo Mowlam, has announced that the government is to look at ways to use technology to provide better public services. The Performance and Innovation Unit (PIU) has been charged with reporting to the Prime Minister on the options for the electronic delivery of services. Dr Mowlam made the announcement at the Local Government Association's Information Age Government Conference, and said it was essential that "the whole community had access to electronically delivered services". The report will look at such topics as using digital TV to help deliver the GCSE curriculum and providing access to services through public kiosks. The PIU will report on the issue next summer. The government plans to have all basic public services delivered electronically by 2008.
