Cable boss urges regulators to keep local loop bundled

By Joey Gardiner, 1 December 1999 13:25

NEWS President of United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC), John Riordan, has told European regulators not to open up the local loop to competition in the fast growing cable TV market. Riordan told a conference on broadband communications that unbundling the local loop would put much needed investment in cable networks in jeopardy. The cable industry is worried that opening up local networks will start a price war, forcing down investment in infrastructure. The "last mile" between the customer and local exchange is an area coming under increasing scrutiny in the telecoms industry as the key to growing broadband services. So far, the cable industry has escaped the regulator's attention in this area, while the telecoms industry is being forced to open up the market.
