Hacking wave ends as FBI prepare to investigate

By John Oates, 10 February 2000 18:27

NEWS The hack attacks which brought down Amazon, CNN, eBay, eTrade and ZDNet seem to have come to a halt, but none of the perpetrators have been identified. Janet Reno, US attorney general, this week pledged a full FBI investigation into the attacks. Share prices in Amazon fell more than three per cent and Yahoo! fell nearly one per cent in a rising market. Alex van Someren, CEO of security company nCipher, said: "I think identifying the ultimate source will be very difficult especially if, as it has been hypothesised, the attack software was delivered to the servers virally. The only way round it is to use distributed Web hosting."
