NEWS Sales of PCs in Europe in 1999 increased 18 per cent on the previous year's figures as consumers increasingly bought computers to access the Internet, according to a report by Dataquest. A total of 29.9 million units were bought in Europe as a whole, with sales in western Europe particularly strong: up 32 per cent on 1998's figures and accounting for 8.5 million unit sales in the region. Dell enjoyed the strongest growth in the vendor wars, with sales increasing 34.4 per cent (2.6 million units). However, the direct sales giant still trails Compaq and Fujitsu in Europe. Compaq's growth rate of 13.4 per cent was well below Dell's, with IBM also experiencing a weaker annual growth of 11.1 per cent.
