NEWS Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society, has revealed plans for an electronic Europe to Silicon.com, one month before publication. His document on e-Europe - currently in draft format - will cover issues such as training, telco infrastructure, entrepreneurship and security. But as Silicon.com's Agenda Setter for the week, he explores issues as diverse as open source ideologist, Linus Torvalds, and the political barriers to innovation. At the heart of the process is industry feedback. "It's very important to talk to the IT directors because they are feeling what is possible to implement in the market," Liikanen told Silicon.com. Liikanen has researched IT directors' views on which technologies are useful, and at what price what the problems are with computer literacy and what the problems arise due to European competition - particularly in the hardware and software markets. His priority is to create a framework for an electronic Europe that will boost prosperity and add social value. When asked whether IT directors would have to wait for an invitation to give their opinions, Liikanen said: "No, I propose them to send me a letter by email. I reply to them all."
