No seat on the board for UK IT

By Polly Raymond, 16 February 2000 17:21

NEWS Almost half of top UK companies are still neglecting the Internet at board level, according a survey published by finance analyst, Close Brothers Corporate Finance. In a survey of around 70 UK public limited companies, 46 per cent admitted to having no designated board member responsible for the Internet or ecommerce. Responsibility for these issues still lie in the hands of the finance or marketing departments, rather than in dedicated teams, despite the fact that many of those companies claim to have adapted their operations to the Internet. Brian Condon, director at Close Brother's Technology Group, said the lack of board-level Internet representatives is surprising considering that most respondents expect the Internet to generate an increasingly larger proportion of revenue over coming years.
