NEWS Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) has launched four combined Masters of Science and technical certification courses, called careerMSc.com. The courses includes six months of Masters-level academic work, focussing on IT, business and management issues, and five weeks of a technical certification for Oracle, SAS Institute, SAP or Sterling Software technologies. Students then complete five months of assessed practical work experience. SHU first launched the programme a year and a half ago in conjunction with SAP, and has now expanded the number of partners involved. Dr Geoff Cutts, head of postgraduate programmes at SHU, said: "We've had over 100 students on the SAP course in the 18 months we've been offering it. We're providing an opportunity for either a major career change or career development." Phil Bond, UK managing director at SAS Institute, said the programme provides exactly the education that IT professionals need. "There's no doubt we have a skills shortage in the UK," he said. "But it's not a shortage of technical skills - all vendors run training courses ourselves - it's applying that knowledge in a business environment to solve problems." SHU hinted that Microsoft and Cisco might join the programme in the future.
