NEWS GE OEC Medical Systems and Visualization Technology (VTI) this week announced a partnership agreement to develop computerised navigation systems for surgical operations.
Image-guided technology is used to help surgeons performing keyhole, and other non-invasive surgery, by providing computerised visual assistance.
Joseph Pepper, president and CEO of GE OEC, said in a statement: "VTI has an industry proven third-generation navigation technology that can track flexible instruments and catheters. This tracking is not possible with other existing optical technology."
"Our strategy is to drive the evolution in intraoperative imaging. The addition of computerised image guidance is the natural progression," Pepper added.
As part of the agreement GE OEC will take an equity stake in VTI. The exact terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
