By Lisa Burroughes, 8 May 2000 16:39

NEWS The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill (RIP) is expected to pass its final stages in the House of Commons today. The report stage and third reading are due to be completed by the close of Parliament tonight. The controversial Bill gives government the power to read encrypted messages on the Internet. However, Shadow Home secretaries, Ann Widdecombe, and Simon Hughes have both tabled amendments to part II of the Bill that covers liability if a person fails to provide an encryption key. Discussion is also expected to touch on the cost to Internet Service Providers.
